Elderflower Cocktail

Elderberry bush in bloom

Many of us know the benefits of elderberry syrup, but have you heard of elderFLOWER syrup? The tiny blossoms of the elderberry bushes are harvested in the spring and turned into a syrup that tastes as delicate and sweet as it looks.
I was first introduced to this dainty cordial by close family friends residing in Switzerland. Their homemade recipe calls for soaking the flowers in warm water for several days, skimming the flowers and then making syrup with water and sugar.
The syrup has grown popular in the states and can be found in local ABC stores, farmer’s markets, and online. To make your own Elderflower Syrup I highly recommend this recipe by The Spruce Eats https://www.thespruceeats.com/easy-classic-elderflower-cordial-435749 .

“Sip of Summer” Elderflower Mocktail or Cocktail

Ingredients:
2-3 Tablespoons Elderflower Syrup per glass
1 Can of Limoncello flavored La Croix or other sparkling water
Ice for chilled glass
Optional: Splash of liquor or champagne of choice

Directions:
Add desired amount of ice to glass and add elderflower syrup. Fill with sparkling water and top with a splash of champagne if desired. Mix to combine syrup. Cheers!

Many of us use elderberry syrup to combat illness and boost our immune systems during the winter months. I found it interesting to learn that as elderflowers are blooming in the spring, they also have medicinal uses similar to the berry. Right as allergy season hits, the blossoms are ready for harvesting and can be used for swollen sinuses, colds, flu, bronchitis, and many other illnesses.
